Accessibility

This encyclopedia is built to be readable and navigable for everyone. What that means in practice:

• Meaning never relies on colour alone. Canon markers are drawn as four fill stages of one shape — solid, half, outline, circle — so they stay distinguishable in greyscale and to colour-blind readers. They are hand-drawn SVG rather than typographic characters, because those render at wildly different sizes depending on the device's fonts. Each marker is decorative and carries a spoken label beside it, so screen readers announce “Canon K1: published in his lifetime” rather than a bare symbol.
• Semantic HTML: one h1 per page, a skip link to the main content, labelled sections and list semantics.
• Without JavaScript every article, index and glossary page is fully readable. Two things genuinely cannot work without it and are therefore hidden rather than shown as dead controls: the search (its index is loaded in the browser) and the “today in the Shire” calendar (today's date is not knowable at build time). Read-aloud audio falls back to the browser's own player.
• Motion discipline: animations are minimal and fully disabled under prefers-reduced-motion.
• Contrast: the paper/ink palette is checked against WCAG AA (body text targets AAA).
• AI-generated audio is labelled wherever it appears.
