Lines of succession
Who ruled after whom — read from the register, and not the same thing as descent. Two marks are used, and the difference matters: “break” means the sources DO give this ruler’s parents and the predecessor is not among them; “descent not given” means they say nothing at all. Of the Ruling Stewards, Appendix A says only that the office passed “from father to son or nearest kin” — which is why nearly all of them carry the second mark and not the first.
