Ancalagon, called the Black, ranked first among Morgoth's winged dragons. During the War of Wrath their onset with thunder, lightning, and flame drove the Valar's forces back. Eärendil on Vingilot, joined by Thorondor's flock of great birds, fought aloft through day and night. Before sunrise he overcame Ancalagon and flung him from the heights; the crash wrecked Thangorodrim's towers. Few of that dragon host survived.
