In briefanswer capsule

Azaghâl was Lord of Belegost among the Dwarves. When Glaurung assailed them, the Naugrim ringed the dragon; their great axes bit even into his armour. In rage Glaurung struck Azaghâl down and crawled over him, yet with a final blow the lord thrust a knife into the beast’s belly. So wounded, Glaurung fled the field, and the creatures of Angband drew back after him. The Dwarves raised their fallen ruler, bore him away with a deep dirge like a funeral march at home, and none dared hinder their slow going.
