Among the notes on Durin’s Folk, Durin VII is named Durin the Last. Report has him leave Erebor for Moria and set that dwelling up once more, as a family table shows. Tolkien never took up the point again. It remains open whether he discarded the notion or it vanished in the hurried finish of the Appendices; the Appendix A line of descent still lists Durin VII and Last.
