In briefanswer capsule

Gorhendad Oldbuck led an ancient family of the Marish and the Shire. He crossed the river that then formed the eastern border, raised and hollowed Brandy Hall, took the name Brandybuck, and ruled an almost separate tract. His kin filled the low hill—a hall with three main entrances, many side doors, near a hundred windows—and built around it. Buckland grew between river and Old Forest; Bucklebury, chief village, lay behind the hall.
