In briefanswer capsule

Lenwë stood in Olwë's Teleri host, farthest back on the westward road. After the Vanyar and Noldor crossed a river under Oromë and fear of dark heights held the rearguard, he quit the march. Leading many south along the great river, they became the Nandor, settled by falls and streams, devoted to water, and skilled beyond other Elves with plants and beasts. His son Denethor later brought some west into Beleriand before the Moon rose.
