Nienna is one of the Valier, the queens of the Valar, and ranks among the Aratar, the mightiest of her order. She grieves for every hurt that Melkor's discord has brought into the world, and from her sorrow she draws pity, patience, and the wisdom to turn mourning into hope. She dwells apart from the other Valar, on the western borders of Aman near the halls of Mandos, and it was she who taught these virtues to the Maia Olórin, later known in Middle-earth as Gandalf.
