In briefanswer capsule

Oropher was king of Silvan Elves in Greenwood the Great in the Second Age and father of Thranduil. Sindarin from Doriath, he and some companions merged with Silvan folk. He withdrew north beyond the Gladden Fields, free of Moria’s Dwarves and Celeborn and Galadriel in Lórien. With Malgalad of Lórien he led a host against Sauron and fell in the first assault on Mordor before Gil-galad’s signal; Thranduil brought home barely a third.
