Barrow-wights

The Barrow-wights are what came to live in the deserted mounds of the Barrow-downs. When the Dúnedain of Cardolan came to an end, evil spirits out of Angmar and Rhudaur entered into the mounds and dwelt there. Tom Bombadil traces it to something that reached the Downs from distant, lightless country: what had been buried began to stir again, and the wights took to wandering the emptied chambers, rings clinking on cold fingers, gold chains moving in the wind. Word of them had travelled as far as the Shire, though it was not the sort of story hobbits cared to sit through. Frodo learned their touch first-hand — a hold on him harder and colder than any iron, a chill that went straight into the bone — and woke imprisoned in a barrow, flat on his back upon cold stone.
