Called Torog in Sindarin, trolls were dull, heavy creatures in the Elder Days with only beastlike speech. Sauron used them, taught scant lore, and turned their wits to malice. They took language from Orcs; Stone-trolls of the Westlands used debased Common Speech. Late in the Third Age Olog-hai appeared in southern Mirkwood and on Mordor's borders. Held to be Sauron's breeding, they outmatched Orcs, bore the Sun under his will, and spoke the Black Speech.
