Oxonmoot has been held every year since 1974, on a weekend close to 22 September — Bilbo's and Frodo's birthday. That is not a coincidence and it is the whole idea: the society's largest gathering sits on the date its subject celebrates.
Around 200 people come, members and non-members alike, from across the world. Since 1991 it has been held in an Oxford college, which supplies rooms, meals and beds for the three to four days — the society effectively takes the college over.
The weekend ends on the Sunday morning with a visit to Tolkien's grave at Wolvercote. If any single custom explains why Oxonmoot is the event people name first, it is that one.
