Destruction of Dol Guldur

Three times during the war the land of the wood-elves was assailed from the fortress in the south of Mirkwood, and three times the assault failed. Once the Dark Tower had fallen, Celeborn led the host of Lórien over Anduin in boats and took the hill; Galadriel brought down what stood on it and opened what lay beneath, and the wood was made clean. The Tale of Years sets the crossing on 28 March of 3019. In the north of the same forest Thranduil fought his own long battle among the trees and came out of it the winner, and on the elves' new year the two met in the middle of the wood, gave it a new name and divided it between them.
