The chronicle of Balin's colony in Moria, written by several hands in runes and Elvish letters, Ori's among them, and found by the Fellowship on Balin's tomb in the Chamber of Mazarbul, slashed, stained and half burnt. Gandalf read from its damaged pages the fate of the Dwarves: Balin lord of Moria, the finding of mithril, the orcs at the East-gate, the drums in the deep, and the last words that they could not get out. He gave the book to Gimli to carry back to Dáin. It is the only record of the colony's five years.
