Grond was the name given to the great battering-ram that the forces of Mordor used to break open the Gate of Minas Tirith during the siege of the city. Iron-headed and immense, it was hauled by mountain-trolls and driven forward under spells and the dread it inspired in defenders. Its name recalled an older weapon: the vast black war-hammer called the Hammer of the Underworld, which Morgoth himself once wielded in his final single combat against the Elven-king Fingolfin.
