The Horn of Gondor is the great heirloom horn of the House of the Stewards, made from the horn of a wild ox of the Vale of Rhûn by Vorondil, father of the first Ruling Steward Mardil. Bound in silver and inscribed in old letters, it passed for many generations to the eldest son of the house, and by old tradition its call would not go unheeded if blown at need within the old bounds of Gondor. Boromir, son of Denethor II, carried it as his birthright and sounded it loudly on leaving Rivendell with the Fellowship of the Ring. He wound it again at Amon Hen in his last fight against Orcs; it lay cloven in two at his side and went with him into his funeral boat. The two halves were later recovered from the river separately and brought to Denethor.
