Mirror of Galadriel

A wide, shallow basin of silver on a low pedestal in a garden of Caras Galadhon. Galadriel filled it from a stream and breathed upon the water; whoever looked in might see the past, the present, or what has not yet come to pass, without knowing which, and Galadriel warned that it is a dangerous guide of deeds. Sam saw Frodo lying pale under a dark cliff and trees felled in the Shire, and wished to go home. Frodo saw a figure in white, the Sea and a ship, and at the last the Eye of Sauron; the Ring grew heavy on its chain, and Galadriel bade him not touch the water. She herself used the Mirror to read the Enemy's mind while he could not see hers.
