An Elvish sword from Gondolin, found with Glamdring and Sting in the trolls' hoard on the way to Erebor. Elrond read its runes: Orcrist, Goblin-cleaver, a famous blade of the Goblin-wars. Thorin bore it into the Misty Mountains, where the goblins, who called it Biter, hated it and all who carried it; they took it from him, and Gandalf brought it away in the escape. After the Battle of Five Armies the Elvenking laid it upon Thorin's tomb under the Mountain, where it is said to gleam when foes draw near. Gandalf still carried its mate Glamdring when the Fellowship set out.
