Sting is a small Elvish blade forged in Gondolin during the First Age, found long afterward by Bilbo Baggins in a troll-hoard. Like other blades of that make, its edge glows blue whenever Orcs are near, serving as both weapon and warning. Bilbo gave it its name after using it against a giant spider in Mirkwood, and later passed it to his heir Frodo, who carried it throughout the journey to Mount Doom.
