The Harfoots were the smallest of the three hobbit kindreds and the darkest of skin; they grew no beards, went without shoes, had deft, quick hands and feet, and preferred upland country and hill slopes. In early days they dealt much with Dwarves. No kindred was more numerous, and none moved west sooner; written record of them begins around 1050 of the Third Age, when they came into Eriador.
