Two great kings of stone stand upon pedestals founded in the deep waters of Anduin, at the entrance to Nen Hithoel. The craft of old shaped them, and through the suns and rains of forgotten years they still frown upon the North with blurred eyes and crannied brows: the left hand of each raised palm outwards in warning, an axe in each right hand, a crumbling helm and crown upon each head — the silent wardens of a long-vanished kingdom, the sentinels of Númenor. Rómendacil II built them at the entrance to Nen Hithoel after he had fortified the west shore of Anduin and forbidden strangers to pass below the Emyn Muil; the Lords of Minas Tirith long kept the passage of the River from Argonath to the Sea. The Company passed them on 25 February 3019 and camped at Parth Galen.
