Gorgoroth is a Mordor plateau between the Shadow Mountains and the Ash Mountains. Above its hollow Sauron built Barad-dûr, his great Dark Tower. There rose Orodruin as well, so named by the Elves after the fire within it. He had chosen that seat long before, using subterranean flame in sorcery and metalwork, and inside Mordor he shaped the Ring of his rule. Once returned, he assumed might again and woke the mountain’s fires for war.
