The Prancing Pony is the old inn of Bree, kept by the family of Butterbur from time beyond record; in Frodo's day the keeper was Barliman Butterbur. Bree lies at an ancient road-meeting, and the Prologue names the inn the home and centre of the art of smoking pipe-weed, which spread from there among Dwarves, Rangers, Wizards and other wanderers who still passed to and fro along that road. Tom Bombadil sent the hobbits to it: four miles along the Road, Bree under Bree-hill, with doors looking westward. There are hobbits in Bree as well as Big Folk, and Merry called the Pony a good inn by all accounts.
