Far in the north Melkor established Utumno, his earliest major stronghold. Within its walls he kept the spirits that first joined him in his former brilliance and that most mirrored his fall: inward fire, outer gloom, dread going before them, scourges of flame—known afterward among the peoples of Middle-earth as Balrogs.
