From 1896 to 1900 Mabel Tolkien and her two sons lived in a cottage at Sarehole, a mile of lanes and fields outside Birmingham: the mill with its two millers, the pool, the sandpit, the bog with its willows, a farmer who chased the boys for mushrooms.
