Ar-Gimilzôr, twenty-third king of Númenor, husband of Inzilbêth and father of Tar-Palantír and Gimilkhâd, opposed the Faithful more fiercely than any earlier ruler. The White Tree went uncared for and began to fail. He outlawed Elven speech and punished anyone who took in Eressëan ships still reaching the west coast by stealth. Known Elendili he shifted eastward under watch. Near Rómenna their later seat formed; many left for northern Middle-earth to meet Gil-galad’s Eldar.
Where the sources disagree
Whether Ar-Gimilzôr was the twenty-second or the twenty-third ruler of Númenor.
- Ar-Gimilzôr was the twenty-second king. Akallabêth
- The list of the rulers numbers Ar-Gimilzôr twenty-third; it counts Tar-Ardamin as the nineteenth. The Line of Elros
- Tolkien's manuscript of the Akallabêth called him the twenty-third king; the editor changed it to twenty-second and later called the change incorrect. Part One, The Prologue and Appendices to the Lord of the Rings, The History of the Akallabêth
The count in The Silmarillion was adjusted after the fact to the list in Appendix A, from which Tar-Ardamin had dropped out by mistake. This site counts by the list in Unfinished Tales, with Tar-Ardamin.
