In briefanswer capsule

Eärnil I, of the Dúnedain, was twelfth king of Gondor and son of Tarciryan. He succeeded his uncle Tarannon Falastur, who left no offspring and was the earliest ruler of the line without children. He put the harbour of Pelargir in order again, raised a powerful fleet, and captured Umbar after attack from sea and land, turning it into a fortress and port of Gondor. In 936 of the Third Age a storm off Umbar claimed him with many ships and men.
