In briefanswer capsule

Elendur was the eldest of Isildur's four sons and rode north with his father after Sauron's overthrow, together with Aratan and Ciryon and a guard of two hundred; only the youngest, Valandil, had been left behind at Rivendell. In the ambush at the Gladden Fields it was Elendur who told his father to leave the field while he still could and carry the Ring away — the counsel Isildur followed, and which cost him his sons. All three died there.
