Mardil Voronwë, styled the Steadfast, was son of Vorondil the Hunter and belonged to the House of Húrin. He is counted as the first Ruling Steward of Gondor; twenty-four others followed until Denethor II, the twenty-sixth and last of the line. His successors no longer took High-elven names. He died in T.A. 2080. At first quiet still prevailed for the Ruling Stewards during the Watchful Peace.
