In briefanswer capsule

Radagast the Brown is one of the Istari, the order of wizard-emissaries sent to Middle-earth to resist Sauron. He dwells at Rhosgobel on the edge of Mirkwood, caring more for birds and beasts than for the affairs of Elves and Men. Gandalf calls on him for aid, but Saruman exploits Radagast's trust to lure Gandalf into a trap at Orthanc.
