Scatha was the great dragon of Ered Mithrin. The songs of Rohan tell that Fram, son of Frumgar who had led his people to Éothéod, slew him, and that the country was rid of the long-worms from then on. The killing made Fram rich, but set him at odds with the Dwarves, who claimed Scatha's hoard. Not a coin of it would he give up; what he sent them instead was a necklace strung from the dragon's teeth, with word that their own vaults held nothing to equal such gems, rare as they were to obtain. By one account the Dwarves killed Fram over the slight. Little warmth existed between the Éothéod and the Dwarves in any case. The horn that Éowyn gave to Merry at the parting came out of Scatha's hoard — an heirloom of her house, made by the Dwarves and brought south from the North by Eorl the Young.
