Battle of Greenfields

Bandobras Took routs an Orc-invasion in the Northfarthing

Other names

Battle of the Green Fields — The Hobbit gives the same battle this form; The Lord of the Rings writes the name as one word. Both are Tolkien's; neither corrects the other. (K1, Source: The Hobbit, Chapter 1, An Unexpected Party)

Greenfields was, until the Battle of Bywater, the only battle ever fought inside the borders of the Shire, and by Bilbo's day it lay beyond living memory. The Tale of Years sets it in 2747 of the Third Age — Shire Reckoning 1147 — when Bandobras Took defeated an Orc-band in the Northfarthing; orcs had renewed their invasions of Eriador seven years before. The Hobbit tells it as a single charge: Bullroarer, big enough for a hobbit to ride a horse, broke the ranks of the goblins of Mount Gram and took their king's head off with a club of wood — the head flew some hundred yards before dropping into a rabbit hole, and that, the story says, is the moment golf was invented.
