In briefanswer capsule

The Vanyar are the first and smallest of the three kindreds of the Eldar who awoke at Cuiviénen and journeyed west to Aman. Led by their king Ingwë, they came to love the Valar above all things and settled closest to them, on the slopes of Taniquetil and in Valmar. Fair-haired and golden, few of the Vanyar ever returned to Middle-earth, and it was Finwë's second wife Indis, a Vanya, whose sons Fingolfin and Finarfin carried Vanyarin blood into the royal house of the Noldor.
