The Variags are the folk of Khand. They appear once in the tale, and only in war: at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields Gothmog, the lieutenant of Morgul, flung them into the fray together with Easterlings bearing axes, Southrons in scarlet and black men out of Far Harad. Once the battle swung the other way, the knights of Dol Amroth pressed eastward, driving troll-men, Variags and sun-shunning orcs ahead of them. Nothing else is told of them — neither their speech, nor their lords, nor their dwellings beyond the name of their land.
