Khand is a land beyond Mordor whose people twice took the field against Gondor. In the year 1944 of the Third Age the Wainriders passed south of Mordor and made alliance with the men of Khand and of Near Harad, and in that assault from north and south Gondor came near to destruction. The Wainriders had first been in conflict with the peoples of Khand before that peace and alliance was agreed. In the War of the Ring the Variags of Khand stood in the host that Gothmog flung into the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, beside Easterlings with axes and Southrons in scarlet.
