The Watcher in the Water is a many-tentacled creature dwelling in the dark pool before the West-gate of Moria. When the Fellowship of the Ring lingers at the gate, it seizes Frodo and attacks the company before being driven back, then causes the entrance to collapse behind them as they flee inside. Tolkien never states what kind of being it is, leaving its nature deliberately unexplained.
