The Passing of the Grey Company

Elrond's sons bring Aragorn a message from their father in Rohan: if his need is urgent, he is to remember the road under the Dwimorberg. At Dunharrow he parts from Théoden; Legolas, Gimli and the thirty Rangers who had ridden south after him go with him, and Éowyn's plea to come is refused. The Tale of Years puts the start at daybreak on 8 March of 3019 and has him at the Stone of Erech before that night was over, with the oathbreakers of the mountains behind him. The road brought him to the coast early enough to seize the corsairs' ships, and in them to the Pelennor. Legolas afterwards called the ride a great deed, and one that would remain great whether or not anybody in Gondor lived to make a song of it.
