The Grey Company

The Grey Company are the Dúnedain of the North who answered a summons: a message reached Rivendell, saying that Aragorn wanted his kinsmen at his side and that the Dúnedain were to ride to him in Rohan. Who had sent it they could not say themselves. Gimli guessed Gandalf; Legolas held it was Galadriel, who had spoken through Gandalf of the ride of the Grey Company from the North. Halbarad led them, and with them rode Elladan and Elrohir, the sons of Elrond. Legolas said of them to Aragorn that if his kinsmen were in any way like himself, thirty such knights would be a strength that could not be counted by heads. While Théoden went by slow paths through the mountains, the Grey Company rode swiftly over the plain and came to Edoras, and thence up the valley; then they took the Paths of the Dead with Aragorn.
