Dunharrow

Dunharrow is the refuge of the Rohirrim above Harrowdale, reached by a climbing road cut into the mountainside. At each turn stand tall stones worked roughly into human shape — bulky things, heavy of limb, seated with legs crossed and short arms laid across swollen bellies; on some, weather has taken every feature but the dark holes of the eyes. The Riders call them the Púkel-men and heed them little, for no power or terror is left in them. Above lies the Firienfeld, a green mountain-field of grass and heath high over the deep-delved courses of the Snowbourn, with the Starkhorn to the south, the saw-toothed Irensaga to the north, and between them the grim black wall of the Dwimorberg, the Haunted Mountain. Gandalf counselled Théoden to lead his people there; when the war went ill, all who escaped were to come thither. It is at Dunharrow that the gate of the Paths of the Dead stands.
