The Ruling Stewards of Gondor, Mardil to Denethor

Twenty-six men held rod and rule in Gondor while no king sat on the throne — each taking office with the oath to hold it „in the name of the king, until he shall return“. Appendix A counts them itself: Mardil Voronwë reckoned the first, and Denethor II „the twenty-sixth and last“. Read in order, this is a thousand years of waiting, and of an oath that came to be little heeded.
