Ecthelion II was the twenty-fifth Ruling Steward of Gondor, governing Minas Tirith in the decades before the War of the Ring. He was noted for his wisdom, welcoming both Gandalf and the mysterious captain Thorongil into his trust and service, in contrast to the greater suspicion shown later by his son. His stewardship ended shortly before the war, when rule passed to Denethor II.
