In briefanswer capsule

Eärendur belonged to the Dúnedain and was the tenth king of Arnor. He was the son of Elendur and died in the year 861 of the Third Age. After Elendil and Isildur, eight High Kings had governed Arnor; once Eärendur was gone, quarrels among his sons split the kingdom into Arthedain, Rhudaur and Cardolan. Amlaith of Fornost, his eldest son, ruled Arthedain in the north-west.
