Fornost, once capital of Arnor, stood on the North Downs in Eriador. When Angmar’s host ruined Amon Sûl in 1409, the palantír was saved and taken there as the Dúnedain withdrew. Young Araphor, with Círdan’s help, later cleared foes from Fornost and those Downs. In 1974 the Witch-king seized the city and pushed nearly all surviving Dúnedain west across the Lune; Arvedui clung to the North Downs, then escaped north with some of his guard.
