Elrond chose the Company himself and fixed its size in a single sentence: nine would go, matched one for one against the nine servants of the Enemy who rode abroad. The number had to be few, because their hope lay in speed and secrecy — a host of Elves in armour of the Elder Days would have availed little, save to arouse the power of Mordor.
