Ithilien was a Gondorian land east of the Anduin. Northward lay wooded slopes, fast streams, fir, cedar, cypress and other resinous trees, glades and fragrant plants, and a milder climate with early spring. Deserted yet beautiful, it was known as Gondor’s garden. Rangers of Ithilien such as Mablung and Damrod, of stock once living there, crossed the Anduin secretly for Denethor against Orcs between the Ephel Dúath and the river. Elves no longer went there.
