Andúnië was of old Númenor’s main city and port, placed amid the western coasts and named for looking toward the sunset. Inland rose Meneltarma, called Pillar of Heaven, with an open shrine left without a roof and dedicated to Eru Ilúvatar—the land’s only such place of worship. Royal tombs stood at its feet; Armenelos, most beautiful of the cities, crowned a nearby hill and held the tower and citadel that Elros, Eärendil’s son, had built.
