Harad

Harad is the South: not one country but kingdoms, told of as Near Harad and Far Harad. Gondor had dealings with the kingdoms of the Harad in the Far South of old, though never friendship; its bounds once lay south beyond the mouths of Anduin, and Umbar was the nearest of the southern realms. King Ciryandil fell in battle in Haradwaith, and in 1050 of the Third Age Hyarmendacil crossed the River Harnen, defeated the Men of the Harad and made their kings acknowledge Gondor's overlordship. In the War of the Ring footmen of Harad came against Minas Tirith with horsemen before them and the mûmakil behind, and out of Far Harad came black men like half-trolls; men of Khand and of Near Harad had allied with the Wainriders long before. After the victory King Elessar made peace with the peoples of Harad.
