Angmar arose in the North beyond the Ettenmoors at the beginning of the reign of Malvegil of Arthedain, and its lands lay on both sides of the Mountains. There gathered many evil men, and Orcs, and other fell creatures. Its lord was known as the Witch-king; that he was in truth the chief of the Ringwraiths, come north to destroy the Dúnedain of Arnor while Gondor was strong and the North-kingdom divided, was not known until later. Rhudaur fell to a lord of the Hill-men in secret league with Angmar; Argeleb was slain in battle against them. In the end the Host of the West came out of Lindon and Arnor, crossed the Lune and challenged the Witch-king, who was then dwelling in Fornost. The sword that ended him at the Pelennor had been wrought long before in the North-kingdom, when the dread realm of Angmar and its sorcerer king were the chief foes of the young Dúnedain.
